Everyone imagines that if you don't disturb the component containing asbestos, that it is safe. Asbestos fibers were used in plaster walls to give added strength to the material. Some houses may still have asbestos insulation on hot water heating pipes in the basement.
Asbestos cement is used as a sealant around the edges of cast iron door frames on old cast iron combustion furnaces. There are asbestos fiber sealants around the glass doors of wood burning fireplaces and stoves that are very much in use in winter. Older houses typically have vinyl asbestos tiles that look no different than newer vinyl ones. You can see asbestos cement sewage pipes in the ceiling of the parking garages. They are still being installed in new condos in Montreal. Asbestos particles are still very much present in older homes because so many building components in the past included them, and many of those products are still around.
